Seven cases of ATM theft have been reported in the first six months of this year with losses amounting to RM1.8mil.
On June 22, a group called the Oxy Gas Gang broke open an ATM at a hypermarket in Taman Permata and got away with RM80,000.
On May 26, an ATM was stolen, incurring losses of over RM61,000.
On May 25, an ATM containing RM200,000 was stolen from a shopping complex in Balakong and on April 29, robbers made off with RM190,000 after breaking open an ATM at Mid Point, Ampang.
Crime analyst Kamal Affendi Hashim said owners should examine the records of companies installing security systems and also records of security companies.
Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (Fomca) communications director Mohd Yusof Abdul Rahman said banks should station armed security guards at ATMs after operating hours. - Bernama
